Scholarships By State

State scholarships are pushed toward college students more than any other award when it comes to seeking out financial assistance for college.  High school guidance counselors and admission offices at colleges and universities are some of the biggest proponents of such awards.  So what is a state scholarship?  Let’s look at the two different types of state scholarships.  You have merit and need base scholarships which operate basically different but are serves the same purpose.  Merit scholarships are given to students who have a high GPA and an exceptional ACT or SAT score.  Need-based scholarships have a variety of specific requirements in place and in order to qualify one must have an income limit in place.

Many state scholarships are being awarded in specific areas where there is an enormous need for workers.  Areas such as teachers and nursing fields in addition to others are in need because of a high turnover rate. The government has many programs in place to encourage college students to pursue these fields.  One such program is designed to award students with state scholarships and after graduation work for the state in designated areas for a specify time.  This of coarse provides great benefits for many students who will not have to look for work after graduation.

A Choice With Benefits

It is a good idea when considering applying for state scholarships to know what the advantages and disadvantages are before going in.  It’s common that many state scholarships are awarded to those students who have graduated from the state in which they attended high school.  Why? Because there is a huge advantage when you consider tuition cost.  In-state tuition is known to be cheaper than out-of-state tuition. So when a student is awarded an in-state scholarship, the awarders can be more openhanded by extending a greater amount than normal.  This is one way that they say thanks for staying in your state and contributing to the state success.  In many other ways, students can be awarded merit and need base scholarships by in-state schools because of the competition in many areas such as science, athletics, music or any other special talents. As you can see, there are many advantages for attending in-state colleges, but what about attending out-of-state schools?  Well, one advantage to getting an out-of-state scholarship is if the student get a 4 year fully paid scholarship.  These type of awards help by deferring out of pocket cost to attend a school in another state.  So, now that you can see some of the + and – of attending either in-state or out-of-state college, go ahead and take a look at some of the state college scholarships here at Freetoapply.com.
