Financial aid was designed as a means of helping students financially to attend college by supplementing cost aimed in helping those who on the other hand might not have the wherewithal to continue their education.
Securing financial aid should always be the first thing that students do when looking to attend college when there is a need financially. Filling out the FAFSA is the first step in making that happens. Why? Because if a student don't apply for FAFSA, they will not be qualified for many grants, scholarships and work-study programs. It also disqualifies them from any additional nonfederal aid and student loans.
So if you are a student, who are looking to start or continue your education, take a moment and read this very important information that can help you get started in obtaining financial aid for college.
Let's look at two ways that students can apply for financial aid:
1. Applying online: When students decide apply online, first there is a verification process use whereby they must apply for a PIN (Personal Identification Number) using their personal information. After the student receive their PIN, that is when the student can submit their required information to apply for financial aid. One good feature that helps in practically eliminating errors is install online as a error checking feature helping reduce the chance of the student application from being postponed or refused.
2. Applying by mail: This is a simple method which involves obtaining a FAFSA form from a high school guidance counselor, college or university admissions office and completing the questions with the right information. It will be a good idea to consider filling out the sample FAFSA form before completing the original form because there's information that you are going to need in order to complete the application.
The information that students are going to need to complete the FAFSA is all financial information, academic info, personal and living status. Students' income tax returns from the past two years are required also.
The First Come - First Serve principle is usually the way many colleges award financial aid to students. So it is highly recommended that you apply no later than March 1. The new printed version for FAFSA is usually available in the second week of October. The new online version is usually available doing the first week of January. The last day to submit a FAFSA is June 30.
Now after submitting your application, it will be processed and you will be sent a (SAR) Student Aid Report. This report is a summary of what you have submitted on the FAFSA form. When the college or university, who you request that the SAR be sent to, get it may require additional information from you. Doing admissions and registration for classes, financial aid is computed and you will be notified about where you stand financially.
